Duddy Kravitz is a poor Jewish kid growing up on Montreal’s Rue St. Urbain Street. And Duddy, he’s got plans. He’s gonna make it big, buy himself some property, be the next Boy Wonder. The book is about how Duddy tries to make it to the top.

At first blush, Duddy is nothing more than a money-hungry son-of-a-bitch. There’s nothing he won’t do for money, nothing he considers more sacred than money. And yet, at least as when he starts out, he really doesn’t want money for its own sake. He wants it to please his grandfather, to earn his father’s love, to be respected. Money for him is entirely conflated with happiness and success. And, he’s not even after ridiculous riches. When he starts out, he just wants the kind of money that will allow him to not drive a taxi and pimp the neighbourhood whore on the side. He doesn’t even know what real affluence looks like. But through his apprenticeship, he becomes aware of how much money there is to be made, and his motives, maybe they change a little bit.

Or maybe they don’t. Richler does a very good job of not showing his hand. The whole book I alternated between thinking Duddy was just about to get his comeuppance, and thinking he was just about to finally make it. A certain kind of success is almost foreordained: on the very first page we are told that the kids of St. Urbain Street all grow up to live in Outremont. But whether Duddy will lose himself in his quest for upward mobility, whether his goals are too audacious for his resources, whether the 140 hour work-weeks are worth it — well, there are no easy answers there. In fact, that’s the great thing about the book. It doesn’t sit in judgement of Duddy. He might succeed, or he might fail, and even at the end we won’t know whether he has, because the metrics by which we can judge success and failure aren’t clear cut.

For all that, I’d have to say I was a little disappointed with Duddy Kravitz. For me, it suffered in comparison with Barney’s Version, which I enjoyed so thoroughly. The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz didn’t quite live up to that (admittedly very high) standard. Didn’t quite grab me in the same way, didn’t make me laugh quite as often.
